I try via Batch Export to create an flv file from my sequence and every time FCP hangs .... multicoloured wheel spins, nothing happens on the progress bar and Force Quit list shows FCP 'not Responding' ... any clues?

any clues

No.  But the following is the best advice when you want to export an FCP project to FLV.  Export it to H.264 or whatever with the QT container at first.  Then plug the QT file into Adobe Media Encoder, Sorenson Media Suite or whatever.  That's what we used to do here.  In this way, you can always go back to the QT file and create a different copy of FLV in case you are unhappy with the final video quality.
